PAUL BURSTON 'Glitteringly epigrammatic, it's a glam-rock Naked Civil Servant in court shoes. WINNER OF THE POLARI FIRST BOOK PRIZE 2011 We never discover whether James is one of them but certainly, as a storyteller, he is one in a million. But here fact is more fantastical than any novel, as we follow our hero from Bermondsey enfant terrible to Valencian grande dame, a scenic journey that stops off variously at Morrissey confidant, dominatrix, singer, songwriter and occasional actor, and is literally littered with memorable bons mots and hilarious anecdotes that make you feel like you've hit the wedding-reception jackpot of being unexpectedly seated next to the groom's flamboyant uncle.Īccording to Wikipedia, very few men can perform the act of autofellatio. If you hadn't heard of rock bands Raymonde or RPLA - fronted by James in the 80s and 90s - you might be forgiven for mistaking AutoFellatio for fiction. She hates him-his stone-cold demeanor, his arrogance and too-perceptive eye-but over the years, even as their games consist of insulting each other’s looks and intelligence, she begins to live to play with him. One winter night and their lives intertwine. With a proclivity for order and the number three, he’s never been tempted to veer off course. Christian Allister has always followed the life plan he’d envisioned in his youth, beneath the harsh lights of a frigid, damp cell. In the New York underworld, others know him as a hustler, a killer, his nature as cold as the heart of ice in his chest. Most see a paragon of morality a special agent upholding the law. Little do most know it’s just a sparkly disguise, there to hide one panic attack at a time. She laughs too loudly, eats without decorum, and mixes up most sayings in the book. Her dresses are too tight, her heels too tall. 6/27/2023 0 Comments A Time to Sow by Dayton WardAlthough their home planet was destroyed long ago, the survivors hope to someday transform a nearby planet into a new home for their people. Her head hit the floor and rolled toward the cage, lifeless jade-green eyes staring into Anock’s soul. How can you reduce yourself to this level? Torture me, kill me, do whatever you want, but please, don’t waste her life.”īlade’s sword hissed through the air, slicing through the female’s neck. He had no intention of letting the woman die. Spare me from having to make this choice. The Keepers are the only Amiti’s hope, I cannot give them up.” She held her head down, but her shaking shoulders betrayed that she was crying. “I am so very sorry.” Oberon glanced at the woman. There’s nothing that you can do that will change my mind.” You can spare her life it’s your choice as much as it is mine. “No, I don’t, and I appeal to your mercy, Anock. You don’t want this female to die, do you?” 6/27/2023 0 Comments Before the Feast by Saša StanišićHere, in his first book set entirely in his new homeland, he widens the lens but lowers the pressure. That rending conflict wired his debut – How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone – with a crackling tragi-comic current of rage and sorrow, nostalgia and grief. This is the second novel by Saša Stanišić, born in Bosnia in 1978 and a teenage refugee from the civil war in former Yugoslavia. And so the little backwater of Fürstenfelde banks another tale in the treasury of stories that braid its people together. Fantasy, folklore, or history: who gets to decide? Back in the present, another young Anna manages to disarm a depressed retired soldier who harbours suicidal, or maybe murderous, thoughts. "Who writes the old stories? Who takes that job on?" In one of the swift dives into the past that punctuate this fictional portrait of a small town in eastern Germany, a girl named Anna stands on the walls with a crossbow to defend her home against the "marauding Soldiery" of the Thirty Years War. 6/27/2023 0 Comments Tandem by Anna JarzabActually, now that I think about it, if anything, the parallel universe concept in Tandem is similar to The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. But despite both books being about parallel universes, they are both completely different. I got hooked on the idea of parallel universes after reading Parallel by Lauren Miller. Tandem is a fun and original new take on parallel universes! I think this book really proves how you can take a similar idea and twist it into something totally different. The first book in the Many-Worlds Trilogy, Tandem is a riveting saga of love and betrayal set in parallel universes in which nothing-and no one-is what it seems. As time runs out, Sasha finds herself torn between two worlds, two lives, and two young men vying for her love-one who knows her secret, and one who thinks she's someone she's not. If Sasha succeeds in fooling everyone, she will be returned home if she fails, she'll be trapped in another girl's life forever. To prevent imminent war, Sasha must slip into the life of an alternate version of herself, a princess who has vanished on the eve of her arranged marriage. Sasha never believed such worlds were real-until now, when she finds herself thrust into one against her will. When she was young, she loved her grandfather's stories of parallel worlds inhabited by girls who looked like her but led totally different lives. Sixteen-year-old Sasha Lawson has only ever known one small, ordinary life. Published by: Delacorte Books for Young Readers on October 8, 2013 |
